Two Solo Gigs THIS WEEKEND!

Hi Friends,

Gosh, it’s been a while since I’ve updated you. I’ve been flying under the radar, taking a lot of sideman gigs and playing a TON with my new (used) mandolin thanks to YOU! Seriously, my utmost and sincere thank you goes out to those who aided my quest either by action or by thought – I am forever grateful. Thank you.

That said, I do have some solo gigs I’d like to make mention of before they’re passed – I have a terrible habit of forgetting to tell people about these things!

On Saturday, September 20, I’ll be playing at Somerville’s inaugural BIG Tiny House Festival . This is an evening-long fest that will feature live local music (I play at 5:00pm) along with local craft vendors in support of showcasing tiny houses. There will be a few houses open for walk-throughs, as well as workshops on how to build your own! This sounds amazingly cool and I am very excited to be a part of it!

The next day, on Sunday, September 21, I am reunited, once again, with my ever-enduring and incredibly talented musical companion, Mya Byrne!! If you feel like haven’t heard that name before, it’s ok – she used to be billed as Jeremiah Birnbaum and is now fully realized as her true self and better than ever!! We will be playing Folk in the Chapel in Norwich, CT, and you can bet we will do it in true KK-MB fashion; swapping instruments and songs as we progress throughout our sets. It’s an afternoon show (3pm) and not that far from Boston, so, if you’re up for a Sunday drive, hop on in the car and meet us there!

I hope you all are enjoying the tail end of summer and finding time to reflect, give thanks and love one another. Have a wonderful day!

Peace,
kara

Kara’s New (or Used) Mandolin Fund!

Hi Friends!

I hope you are all staying warm in this arctic freeze that’s been hovering over the lower 48! In this time of indoor contemplation, I wanted to let you know that I am taking steps to sound better! I’ve set up a virtual pass-the-hat to help collect the necessary funds to finally get a decent mandolin. This has been a long time coming and an even longer time gaining enough will power to ask for help. I hope you can take a moment and read more about it here :)

Thanks!
Kara

Passim – 9/30/13

Hello Interworld!

I hope you all had a great summer. Mine was filled with lots of singing…with 3, 4 and 5 year olds, that is. I was delighted to spend a third summer teaching music for the Beaver Summer Programs Lower Camp in Chestnut Hill! My, that brings a smile to my face. Do you know what also brings a smile to my face? Playing “grown-up music” for YOU!! After a bit of a hiatus, I’ll be getting back into the saddle with my old pal, Jeremiah Birnbaum, at our fav. local venue, Club Passim! Like leather boots, good wine and (most) motorists, our show only gets better with age. Can you believe that Jeremiah, or “Jobim” as you may hear me refer to him on stage, and I have been playing together for nearly 10 years now! I still can’t get enough of his wailing solos, melodic accents and all around badass playing! If you’ve heard my latest record, you know a bit about what to expect, although, as with any live show, anything can (and is bound to) happen! There’s nothing like the chemistry of playing live with someone else. Not to mention, you’ll get to hear HIS songs as well.

$12/$10 tickets available online at Passim.org. Reserve them now – you’ll get to sit at a table! Doors open at 6:30pm, music starts at 8pm. Come get your Veggie Planet eat/drink on and listen to an undoubtedly beautiful opening set by Juno-Award-Winning singer/songwriter Amelia Curran!

That’s all for now! Have a great week and, as always, thanks for listening.

Peace,
kara

A Few Upcoming Shows!

Hi Friends,

I know I’m due for a *real update soon, but I wanted to make sure that I got the word out there about a few upcoming shows. These are all in the Boston area, although I will be making it down to Rhode Island in March – check back here (or on any of my Facebook pages or in your email list box) for more details on that one. For now, my fellow Bostonians, and those traveling to visit, may catch this handful of shows in the next couple weeks!

Starting things off, I’ll be playing at The Burren in the front room tomorrow (January 16th), round-table style, with my pals Kirsten Lamb (bass), James McIver (banjo) and Erik White (guitar). Music starts at 8:30.

On Sunday, January 20th (Sun), I’ll kick it back to the Back Room of The Burren, for a Songwriter Series night with my TRIO. We go on at 8pm and will be followed by Matt Borello and later the Baker Thomas Band!

Lastly, on January 22nd (Tues), I’ll be on stage with my bluegrass/americana band, Creek River String Band, at Sally O’Brien’s. Music starts at 8pm and Amy Kucharik and Friends With Benefits will open!

One awesome thing that all of these shows have in common is that they’re all FREE OF COVER CHARGE!! That means, you don’t have to pay to get in, but we’d still appreciate a few dollars in the tip jar if you can swing it!

As always, thanks for listening and see you out there!

Peace,
Kara

Club Passim Sept. 13th!

Kara Kulpa. Olinde Mandell. Mark Lipman.
Hi Folks!

I hope you all had a happy and safe Labor Day weekend and are settling back in to the flow of things nicely. I spent the weekend in beautiful Vermont and am now back to the grindstone listing and promoting shows; as it goes for a modern singer/songwriter. :) So, I’d like to take this e-moment to formally invite all who are reading this to my next show at the famed Club Passim on Thursday, September 13th. I am ecstatic to be back at one of the finest venues in the country and to be performing with my extraordinarily talented comrades, Olinde Mandell and Mark Lipman. We’re playing the night in-the-round and will be freely floating in and out of each others’ songs on whichever instruments suit our fancies. I love performing with these two and, while we’ve been rehearsing some tightly polished vocal harmonies, we’re leaving most of the playing up to improvisation, leading the night into an excitingly open and one-of-a-kind outcome! If you’re not in the area, you can also catch a live webcast of this performance via Concert Window, at 8:00pm EST. That’s all I’ve got for right now, but as always, I’m working hard behind the scenes to bring you new music and shows, so, check back often!

Have an excellent week and see you out there!
Peace,
Kara

Summer Rain on a Wacky Wednesday!

Hi Folks,

That’s odd…I think my font changed to a truly Doogie-Howser-esque courier old style? Perhaps it picked up on the apt adjective in today’s subject heading…perhaps it will change once I post this…hmmm. Anyway, it’s been a lovely rainy day here in Cambridge and I’ve found myself a few moments to sit down and share some news with you!

If you’re on my mailing list, chances are some of this may be a recap. If you’re not on my mailing list, why not join? (Click here to receive news, show listings and inside scoops on upcoming adventures, compilations and albums!)

First and foremost, if you’re super-up-to-date and are reading this now, the reason I’ve entitled this piece “Wacky Wednesday” is that we (Exile on Elm Street – my Tuesday night residency) are playing at The Burren tonight! So, stop on by if you’d like :) If you can’t make it in person, why not go on Facebook and show your support by “liking” our very brand new Exile on Elm Street Fan Page! We’d really appreciate it :)

Secondly, I’d like to invite you all to a “secret” backyard concert series I’ll be playing on July 10th. Since it’s “secret,” I won’t give out the address online, but, feel free to email me (kara@karakulpa.com) and I’ll give you the details! I will say that, should you choose to attend this awesome evening, you can expect it to involve it chickens, bug spray, a mezzanine and spotlighting…what more could you ask for from a summer evening in Somerville, MA? :)

Thirdly, I’m very excited to soon join the ranks of those who have “played at Falcon Ridge” by taking the Lounge Stage at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this July as myself and also taking the Main Stage as part of the folk band, Pesky J. Nixon. For more information regarding these shows, you can visit the festival’s official website at FalconRidgeFolk.com

I will also be making my way back to Columbia, MO, this August and am looking forward to entertaining the folks out at The Bridge on Saturday, August 11 at 8pm!! And, for those of us local folks, I’ll be back on stage at my fav, Club Passim, on September 13, 2012!

You can also check the SHOWS page/tab for details on my regular gigs and those I’ve failed to mention in this post (they exist..and they’re plentiful in numbers!)

Other than all of that, I’ve been spending some time writing recently, so if you come out to a show, you’re bound to hear some new material! The springtime/summer always encourages new ideas and I’m grateful for each one.

Hope all is well with you and that you’re enjoying the warmer season. See you out there!

Peace,
kara
